Until my third trimester, I had fully intended on giving birth at The Birth Center. However, something in me changed and around 28 weeks I asked the midwives if I could switch to a home birth. It was so easy to make this change and each midwife was so encouraging regarding this new plan.
Fast forward to 40 weeks and 6 days along: Labor began around dinner time, but laboring in my own home made it all seem too easy. I would have a contraction then eat dinner, have another and then put my children to bed, have one more and sit with my dog or step outside. It was magical.
By midnight, my contractions intensified and I called Jamie. She came over around 1 am to check me and I was 8 cm dilated! Shortly after, Courtney showed up and the peace and knowledge these two filled our home with was indescribable.
My contractions were intense, but 10 or more minutes apart. It was hard to even believe I was in active labor with that much time to rest in between. They worked with me to get in special positions and knew exactly what needed to be done to help us meet our baby girl.
Then, only one hour after my first cervical check, baby girl was born straight into my husband’s arms. Shortly after, Jamie and Courtney were off to deliver many more babies that would be born at The Birth Center that day and left us in the peace and quiet of our home to soak in our new baby girl.
To this day, I have a hard time believing it all happened so peacefully and so easily. I truly believe it’s because I was surrounded by people who believed in me and supported my choice to have the birth I knew my heart was telling me to work for. I cannot wait to tell my daughter how easy, peaceful and truly perfect her birth was.
