After five boys, I was beyond excited to be expecting my first daughter. I had given birth to my twins naturally in the hospital and knew I wanted to experience a natural birth again — but this time, in a more peaceful and supportive environment. After researching my options, I decided The Birth Center was the perfect place to bring her into the world.
It was an evening in late pregnancy when my labor started, around 8:30 PM. I had some light contractions, but I wasn’t sure if it was the real thing yet. I decided to go for a walk, and by the time I came back, the contractions were starting to pick up. I hopped on the ball to help with the pressure, but eventually, I felt drawn to laboring on the toilet. The contractions were getting more intense, so we called my doula for support.
My doula arrived at the house, and I continued laboring on the toilet, trying to stay as comfortable as possible. After a little while, she noticed it sounded like I was beginning to push. She said, “Let’s head to The Birth Center,” and connected with my midwife, Jamie, so I didn’t have to worry about anything. By the time we arrived, everything was set up perfectly — the room was warm, inviting, and the tub was already filled. Jamie had thought of everything, and it was such a relief to just walk in and not have to stress about a thing.
Jamie checked me and said I was at six centimeters, and my waters were bulging. She asked if I was ready to pop my water, but I hesitated, feeling a little overwhelmed. I decided to walk around The Birth Center for a while instead, and it was the most calming experience. The atmosphere was so peaceful and soothing, and I could just focus on my body and my baby.
After about an hour of walking, I felt ready, so we decided to pop my water. Almost immediately, the contractions intensified, and I knew we were getting close. I hopped into the warm water of the tub, and within about 30 minutes, my body started to push — it was like the fetal ejection reflex took over. Without any effort on my part, my baby girl was born in the water.
Jamie helped me lift her onto my chest, and my husband and I both burst into tears. After five boys, this was the moment we had been waiting for — our first daughter. It was pure joy, and we couldn’t stop staring at her.
Jamie helped me out of the tub and into the bed, where we snuggled with our beautiful girl. It felt like the perfect end to an amazing journey. After about two hours, we were able to go home, and it felt like a dream. I couldn’t have asked for a more peaceful, empowering birth experience.
